SPANA – Veterinary Online Learning Portal

SPANA Veterinary Online Learning Portal

SPANA (the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad) received generous funding from the Elise Pilkington Charitable Trust in 2018 to establish a new online learning portal. The learning portal will inform, educate and lead staff development overseas in nine countries in which the charity operates: Botswana, Ethiopia, Jordan, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Myanmar, Tunisia and Zimbabwe.

Founded in 1923, SPANA’s mission is to improve the welfare of working animals in the world’s poorest communities. Working animals are indispensable to millions of families in developing countries, but poverty and a lack of veterinary services mean these animals often suffer, without even basic care. SPANA’s vets work tirelessly to treat hundreds of thousands of animals every year, vaccinating against deadly diseases, treating painful injuries and replacing ill-fitting and harmful equipment that can cause wounds. For many animals, this will be the only veterinary care they receive during their lifetime and it is essential that SPANA maintains a consistently high standard of treatment at all fixed and mobile veterinary clinics.

Carrying out SPANA’s vital work across nine core countries presents unique training challenges and the new online learning portal will allow the charity’s international veterinary teams to build upon existing knowledge and skills through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training, assessment and access to learning resources.

The portal will benefit over 100 veterinarians and animal care professionals, helping them to provide better care to the thousands of animals they treat each year.
