UCanDoIT is a charity that teaches people with disabilities how to use computers and the internet. The charity teaches people of all ages and all disabilities on their own computers, in their own homes on a one-to-one basis.
The grant from Elise Pilkington has enabled us to provide software that is specifically valuable to older visually impaired learners. The software is simple to use and reads out loud to the user. The grant also paid for our trainers to teach them how to use the software for emails and the internet.
Esat, 72, one of the beneficiaries of the grant said “I’ve never used computers before I enrolled for the UCDIT course, and was sent a computer and software. Computers were never on my mind, since I can’t see. Never did I think that a blind person can use a computer. It opened up a new world for me. I am now independently using the computer to email, to socialise with people on Facebook. I have lots of friends on Facebook, they send me messages, and I reply back. It is great way of not being alone. Still I keep learning and improving.”
