Reach Befriending supports those over 65 with one to one befriending, the majority of whom are over 80yrs. Run by local volunteers who are matched with their ‘neighbours’ to offer friendship, with a goal of seeing ‘neighbours looking after neighbours’ and to show love and care to all the elderly in the local area, reminding them that they are valued and not forgotten.
As referrals have increased the need has arisen for a support worker who acts as an interim befriender for those most vulnerable whilst they await matching with a permanent volunteer and also acting as ‘Pastoral Liaison’ to the volunteers.
As a small Charity Reach prides itself on ‘going the extra mile’ to make sure all those who are referred feel valued and cared. This could include simple touches like flowers when in hospital or bereaved, birthday cards and gifts especially for milestone birthdays, extra visits or trips out to the café etc when they are feeling in low moods or organising a hot meal delivery. It also includes larger pastoral support such as welfare checks, reporting and filing safeguarding concerns and referring to local counselling services.
The majority of those supported by Reach are over 80yrs with many being housebound and living alone. Few have some family nearby and the majority have no family at all or only distant relatives. All are isolated.
