“In April 2023, the Elise Pilkington Charitable Trust made Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land an extremely generous grant of £7,800”
Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land has around 200 donkeys at its sanctuary in Israel. Although in the wild, donkeys are usually taken by predators before they have a chance to become old, in the sanctuary environment the donkeys reach a greater age. Around 50 donkeys at the sanctuary are now “seniors” with around 20 of these having problems such as teeth and needing to be fed a special diet of “short chop” straw (straw which is cut into small pieces to make it easier to chew and digest). If donkeys cannot digest their food properly, they will lose weight and may eventually have to be put to sleep.
“Short chop straw is very expensive in Israel and we were paying about £2,500 a month just to feed the 20 donkeys.
The grant of £7,800 has been spent on a special shredder to turn existing straw at the sanctuary into “short chop” straw for the 20 or so donkeys which need this special food.
This has enabled us to release the £2,500 a month we were spending on “short chop” straw to care for even more donkeys in Israel and the Palestinian Territories.
